The Master Transition Checklist
Moving after decades in a home is a massive undertaking. Break it down into manageable steps with our timeline-based checklist.
Your Step-by-Step Guide
Follow this timeline to reduce stress and ensure nothing falls through the cracks.
3–6 Months Before Move
The planning and sorting phase.
- Consult professionals: Meet with a real estate broker, financial planner, and elder law attorney to understand your options and equity.
- Start floor planning: Get the floor plan of the new residence to determine exactly what furniture will fit.
- Begin sorting: Start the "Keep, Donate, Sell, Trash" process using the 15-minute rule to avoid getting overwhelmed.
- Involve family: Ask children to claim and remove any items or heirlooms they want to keep.
1–2 Months Before Move
Logistics and home preparation.
- Hire a Moving Manager: If the process is too much, hire a Senior Move Manager to handle the logistics.
- Schedule estate sales: Book an estate liquidator or donation pickup for the items you aren't taking.
- Prep the home: Work with your broker to coordinate any necessary painting, repairs, or staging.
- Change of address: Begin notifying the post office, banks, Medicare, and subscription services.
2 Weeks Before Move
Finalizing the details.
- Pack an essentials box: Medications, important documents, toiletries, and a few days of clothes.
- Transfer utilities: Schedule the shut-off at the current home and activation at the new residence.
- Confirm movers: Verify the arrival time and details with your moving company.
